Pahlka: ‘Government really is the way we do things collectively that we can’t do individually’

Great TEDxPhilly talk by Code for America Founder and Executive Director Jen Pahlka. Really inspiring to see Jen articulate what’s happening around city and local government beyond the tech talk people like me are so in the weeds on. I remember the old days when Jen humored me in 2009 and was one of the first people I interviewed using my trusty Flip on a tripod.

CityCamp Code Across America: A Week of Civic Innovation

From February 24 through March 4, passionate citizens around the country will come together to “Code Across America” – to make their cities even better. In over a dozen cities, there will be hackathons to build civic apps, “brigades” to deploy existing apps, unconferences to plan for the year ahead, and meetups to strengthen the community. Five of these cities are CityCamp cities.

24 Hour City Project Showcases Four Custom Built Projects at DCWEEK

Inspired by the National Building Museum’s Intelligent Cities initiative, the 24 Hour City Project encourages participants to explore the intersection of the built environment, data, the arts, and information technology. Criteria for projects submitted to the 24 Hour City Project were that they must have a physical and digital component.  DCWEEK is approaching fast (Nov 4-11), and we recently discovered this project will be highlighted during the week-long technology festival. 24 Hour City Project five main goals begin with leveraging technology and data to reveal hidden relationships between our physical and digital worlds, and impact the way we interact with our environments and each other.

Code for Oakland

A one-day bar camp on using local data to build apps for Oakland at Kaiser Center.  Innovate Oakland (InOak),  Oakland Local and Code for America are organizing a day to brainstorm and work on concepts for mobile apps for the Knight/FCC Apps for Communities competition.
