Using Facebook Fan Pages to Better Engage Your Participants

These days RFPs for planning projects often include the requirement to use Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites as a means to communicate with the public. Unfortunately, it typically doesn’t go beyond that and many projects that we have seen simply use these venues under the assumption we-build-it-and-they-will-come. Therefore the level of activity and fans or followers is often low.

A while back, Social Media Examiner provided a nice roundup with very specific tips on how to make your Facebook Fan page (we recommend you use Fan pages for your projects, rather than groups) more engaging and interesting for your target audience. We thought it would be good to remind our readers about some of these great tips as they continue to be very relevant.  The roundup covers everything from frequency of content,  what to post, quality of content, your style, and different media formats, etc. Here, we've highlighted just a few best practices regarding frequency of content posts on Facebook Fan pages:

Frequency of Content

  • For most fan pages, there is a direct correlation between frequency of posts and number of fans. Frequency is king, but there’s a fine balance – you don’t want to overwhelm your fans.

  • If you’re just starting out with your fan page, I would suggest a minimum of one update per day and increase from there to several times a day (mixing up the types of posts – see below) if you’re getting a good response from your fans.

  • Daily posting (at least Monday through Saturday) should yield daily comments and engagement.

  • You’ll find the right rhythm with your fans. Better to start with once a day than several times a day and have your wall filled with only your own posts.

  • Also, keep in mind “high traffic windows.” Depending on your time zone and the time zone of the majority of your fans, you’ll probably want to post sometime between 8:15am PST and 2:00pm PST.
